Five weeks have already passed by at Girls on the Run. Twenty-seven girls in grades 3 through 6 have been gathering on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s to discuss important issues that teach the healthy development of self, team and community. The girls participate in activities, such as running and team building exercises. This week, girls and Coaches continue to promote working together and supporting each other through challenges at school and at home. All girls are also currently fund raising for Girls on the Run; the money collected will enable us to continue to offer full and partial scholarships for participants.
At the end of the program, the girls select and carry out a community service project and run a 5K race with other regional Girls on the Run participants. Coaches are local women, who volunteer their time to become certified to work with the girls through the ten week duration of the program. Our local chapter of Girls on the Run Serving Grand County Utah was established in February of 2010. Girls on the Run in Moab is a partner of the BEACON Afterschool Program, and is a charity served by the Moab Half Marathon. |

Makayla and Taylor work hard to figure out which liquid is water
With the clubs at HMK taking a break, last week the students in the tutoring program learned about water and some of its amazing properties. With help from “Project Wet” the students performed different experiments with water to learn about surface tension; the phenomenon that occurs at a liquids surface, causing the molecules to strive to stick together. Using eye droppers students competed to see who could put the most drops of water on one penny. The winning group placed 68 drops of water on the surface of a single penny!
Other experiments included a contest to see who could stretch their drop of water the farthest. The winner stretched a large drop of water for over 16 cm before it separated. Races and volume experiments were also performed to demonstrate the elasticity of water and its powerful molecules!
Some of the older students performed an experiment to determine which clear liquid, out of ten different clear liquids, was water. Students used deduction, experimentation, and the scientific method to figure out which glass was safe for them to drink. Working in small groups, the afterschool kids had to work as a team. Hopefully the students realized, just like water molecules, it is easier to get things done when you stick together.

Edgar, Joel, and Gavin are getting close to figuring out the problem at hand

Justeen and Bryson are enjoying the experiment, and the beautiful day |
