The New Year started with great developments at Adventure
Ed. Our program welcomed two new staff
members, Chessie Woodruff and Chantze Palmer.
Chessie will provide bilingual tutoring services to our students, while
Chantze will provide essential tutoring assistance. Mr. Palmer is also an ELL instructor at the Middle
School, so we all hope to use his experience to better our program.
Adventure Ed continues to provide important prevention programming
for Middle School students, including after school tutoring and fun after
school clubs and enrichment activities. Our current clubs include Teen
Advocates, Taiko Drumming, Friday Fun Club and Drama.
Also, through our partnership with Club Red, students may also attend
drop-in hours at the Moab Teen Center.
As always, parents and community members may call the Adventure
Ed office if interested in leading a club.
Please call 435-259-2767. |

Adventure Ed welcomed the holiday season with a healthy holiday cooking event held at the Youth Garden Project on December 11. Students learned about making good food choices and sampled delicious holiday dishes under the instruction of nutritionist Sarah Heffron. Club Red Prevention Programming staff member Jane Butter led the event with Adventure Ed tutor Abby Scott. The program featured seasonal produce and emphasized the importance of using local, sustainable ingredients. Each participating student cooked with the staff and had a great time eating the tasty results. Many thanks to the staff of the Youth Garden Project for providing the kitchen space for this event. The kids loved it!

Adventure Ed is transitioning to a new trimester this week, with
several new program developments in progress. The program will continue
with the Homework Club, where students can snack and receive homework
assistance, and start a new Drama Club that will meet every Thursday.
The Native American Club hopes to expand its meetings, and Adventure Ed
will begin the first in a series of prevention programming events
emphasizing life skills, well-being, nutrition and other activities.
As with last trimester, students can also participate in Teen
Advocates, with Tobacco Prevention Specialist and tutor Nancy Allemand.
All
of these great new changes come with the addition last month of three
new staff members, tutors Cari Arneson and Abigail Scott, and bilingual
tutor Faye Geiger. Faye will work with bilingual students during
Homework Club, Abigail will focus her attention on working with Club
Red developing our prevention programming and Cari will work to
implement a new student Incentive Program. For more information about Adventure Ed, including opportunities to lead clubs or volunteer tutoring, please call 435-260-9439. |

Children, parents, teachers
and community leaders gathered on October 22 at a Lights On Afterschool celebration
at Grand County Middle School to recognize the importance of afterschool
programs.
Club Red, the BEACON Afterschool
Program and the Tobacco Prevention Program joined with the Afterschool Alliance
in this year’s Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide series of events in
support of afterschool programming. To mark the occasion supporters came
together for a night of great food, crafts, games, raffles and music.
Special guests included Mayor
Dave Sakrison and several afterschool program participants. Afterschool programs currently serve over 600
youth in Moab, providing them a safe place to go after the school day ends.
Afterschool programs keep kids
safe, help working families and inspire learning. According to data from the
Afterschool Alliance, 14.3 million children are without adult supervision in
the afternoon hours.
For further information about
afterschool programs in Moab, please contact Club Red at 259-1144 or the BEACON
Afterschool Program at 259-2767.
