BEACON Lego Robotics Club heads to state championship!
After winning the First Lego League regional tournament in Richfield Jan. 8, “The Dark Mechanics” — the BEACON Afterschool Lego Robotics club at Grand County Middle School — is heading to the state championship. The club will compete at Utah Valley University in Orem Jan. 30 for the state title in a robotics game that emphasizes respect and teamwork.
BEACON GCMS site coordinator Jeremy Spaulding said it was a great experience watching the eight students work together to program a robot, problem solve and conceptualize solutions to real-world problems.
“It was a wonderful time, it was really fun, really positive. It’s not about competition against other teams, it’s about competing against your personal best,” Spaulding said. “For us, it was an opportunity to bring kids out on an adventure on something they worked hard for far away from their hometown.”
I hope the work I do every day creates an inviting, fun, safe environment for students to grow as intrinsically motivated learners, in school and out. I hope to foster pride for our kids in who they are, where they came from, and where they're headed. -Jeremy Spaulding
