1) Academic Assistance: The purpose of the BEACON Academic Assistance Program is to help close the achievement gap by providing a diverse range of academic support to students through a variety of programs:
Tutoring: Individual and group tutoring, including bilingual tutors, provide 1-on-1 and/or small group tutoring for those needing extra assistance.
Homework Clubs: For those students needing a place and little help with their studies
Homework Power Hour: At-risk students, their parents and teachers all sign an individualized work plan that addresses the gaps in knowledge and a path to gain the ‘missed’ foundational concepts through working with BEACON tutors at the Grand County Middle School.
Independent and Group Study: Tutors assist at-risk students with extra credit projects that are aligned with school curriculum and approved by their teachers.
Study Skills Group: For those students needing to improve in organizational skills and learning how to study.
Classroom Success Skills: For students who need to improve in test preparation, test taking skills, taking notes, time management, and staying organized.
Summer School Aid: BEACON helps support the Middle School summer school program with funding from the Daniels Fund. Students are able to catch-up on the foundations of their grade level, allowing them to enter the new school year on-track and confident.
2) Enriching Arts and Recreational Clubs:
The purpose of the BEACON enrichment clubs is to provide an enriching and healthy afterschool environment which includes a wide-variety of clubs and activities that expand on school day learning. BEACON strives to create a diverse selection of enrichment clubs for our students by partnering with community organizations, businesses, and individuals. Our enrichment offerings include clubs that incorporate and are based around Utah Core Curriculum, life skills, and prevention components. All of our clubs give students an opportunity to learn in an alternative and engaging way, explore new interests, sports, or discover new talents. We help participants increase confidence levels and desire to learn, build inter-personal skills such a team work, individual responsibility, job-readiness, healthy lifestyles, and conflict resolution, through each of our unique offerings.
3) Family/Community Outreach Services: Family Outreach services provide a deep and meaningful connection for families to their student’s school-day and afterschool commitments. The BEACON Family Engagement and Outreach Coordinator takes on several important aspects of BEACON’S family outreach including communicating between school day staff, families, and BEACON staff; identifying and offering support to families in need via home visits and community resource referrals; and playing a pivotal role in family event planning. Family Engagement and Outreach is an important part of the comprehensive support system at BEACON.
