Being physically active is one of the most important steps to being healthy. Afterschool programs are an ideal setting for teaching youth how to adopt and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Afterschool can help youth learn how to be physically active for a lifetime.Play, physical activity, physical education, recess and sports are cherished parts of childhood It is the BEACON Afterschool Program's goal to get the children of Grand County Healthy and Active, by providing an eclectic variety of physically active enrichment clubs.
By partnering with La Sal Mountain Outfitters and having access to Grand County Middle School's bows, the BEACON program at HMK and GCMS have the opportunity to learn the art of Archery. Students learn all the safety procedures of target Archery. Then the real fun begins. Through Archery these students improve physical health, learn focus, self-discipline, coordination, learn goal setting, while building confidence and self-awareness.
Girls On The Run
BEACON partners with Girls on the Run a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential.
Meeting twice a week in a small teams, we teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence.The curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches.
Thanks to generous donations from Moab Gear Trader, are students have able to discover the world of slackline. Where youth learn to rig and walk a slackline like a pro! The club teaches slackline technique, safety and hardware. It also incorporates yoga, circus tricks, and longline once students have mastered the basics.
Our swim club provided in partnership with the Moab Recreation & Aquatic Center the social aspect of swimming, where splashing, laughing and whole lot of fun is guaranteed. Students learn safety at the pool, continue to work on their swimming skills, practice diving, have swimming competitions, and explore many of the other amazing water sports. The result is an environment where child encourage, support and learn from one another, and simply have a blast swimming!
Thanks to our partnership with Dance Moab and Hurricane Rita, the students of Grand County explore the world of Latin Dance through Bachata, Salsa and Zumba. Latin Dance for children is a source of exercise, social development, and just plain fun. Our students respond to the fast rhythms and exciting choreography, then get to showcase their dance moves to the community.
What better way to get active then having some fun on wheels! With a mixture of skills work, dance parties and games,it is never a dull moment in skate club. Students learn stability and agility. Plus they even get to take field trips. They all have a blast and they can't wait to join Jr. Roller Derby!
